I have seen a lot of awesome wire baskets for house goods, but some of them can be expensive. I decided to try to make my own basket to the size and shape I wanted. #Custom
After a trip to the hardware store (where all the cheap craft supplies are) and digging around my house I had all my materials. I wasn’t sure what size wire would be best, but figured the smaller gaps (1/2 inch) would be better for holding all types of items.
Materials
- Needle Nose Pliers – Husband’s Tool Box
- Galvanized Hardware Cloth Mesh (1/2 inch grid) – Ace Hardware
- Twine Rope – Depths of the Craft Supply
- Grid Cutting Mat – Hobby Lobby
- Sharpie Marker – House Junk Drawer
- Gloves – Optional…I didn’t wear them and about half way through wish I would have.
Steps
- Unwind cloth mesh and try to flatten it out as best you can. I ended up using a metal angle to work over and flatten out the wire making it easier to work with.
- Using the grid cutting mat measure out desired size of box. I went with a 20×24 inch rectangle
- Mark corners to be cut with the Sharpie.
- Snip out the the wire using the pliers (Warning: may develop hand cramping so take your time)
- Using the metal angle measure in your desired wall height. I did 6 inches. Mark this with your angle or ruler.
- Cut out the squares leaving, leaving the unfolded box. Leave end pieces on every other cut out so they can be linked to their adjoining wall once you fold them up.
- Using metal angle bend walls up into place.
- Secure walls by bending the end pieces around their adjoining wall with the pliers.
- Once you have finished securing all 4 sides your wire basket is complete!
- To add a little more to mine I looped twine around the top loops, but you could also do this with ribbon for a more colorful finish.Â
I hope this post was helpful and you too can make your own wire baskets. A good project for anyone with minimal metal working experience and some patience.
I’m excited to be collaborating with Ace Hardware as part of their Ace Blogger Panel.
Ace has provided me with the Ace Hardware materials for this project (Totes appreciated Ace!), and all opinions are my own.
